For the past two years, the team at Your Support Matters have been providing training sessions on the Social Model of Disability, Personal Budgets and Theories and Models of Disability to a range of professional partners, including lectures at MMU, social workers and Doctors and Consultants at York CCG.

Over 500 people have taken part in our training so far, all sponsored by Churchill Fellowship COVID Fund. Our aim is continue this Nationally and to build on our network of companies and organisations.

Theories and Models of Disability at MMU

In March, we delivered a lecture to students in the combined Health and Social Care course, where we covered topics such as the Social Model of Disability, disability politics and the history of disability activism.

It was an opportunity to cover our own research that we carried out in 2021 and 2019 as a way of informing them of the issues that disabled people and their PA's have faced across Greater Manchester. The students enjoyed the interactive nature of the lecture, where they had an opportunity to ask questions and relate it to their own studies.

Self Directed

 Support

Training at

MMU

Our training on self directed support was crucial for future professionals in Health and Social Care to learn about, especially when many of them will be making decisions about the support for disabled people.

At the heart of this training is the Person Centred Approach to support plans and care plans as well as learning about the the process of getting somebody support, covering the sticky subject of financial assessments.

We know that the process is a mine field but the our training has allowed students to be more informed and enlightened about the process involved.

The students found it insightful and many of them used the information that they had learnt in their dissertations.

Dr Ffion Evans

Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University

Social Model of Disability Trainining at Salford Adult Social Care

It was interactive and fun

Not everyone was able to make it to the in-person event so using  the power of technology we were able to do the training on Microsoft Teams at the same time. No one was left out and people were able to still take part regardless of whether they were in the room or not.

It was practical

Our belief is that training should be applied to a the job on a daily basis, this means that the social workers can see how social model works in action.

It is personal and meaningful

We found that by bringing in our personal experiences and journey that this resonated well with social workers and was an opportunity for them to see how things can go wrong within the process of supporting an individual and problems with the system that they work in.

Neil Symons

Advanced Social Work Practitoner

 Salford Adult Social Care

Self Directed Support Training Whole Life Disability Services at Nottingham County Council.

It was a huge privilege for Will to be invited to present to the disability teams in Nottingham as part of a series of discussions from professionals working with disabled people.

The talk was all about the Will's journey of being a disabled person with cerebral palsy, from his struggles as a youngster and in special needs school to eventually embarking on leadership courses and his journey to independence.

The presentation also looked at the realities of being on self directed support which were both insightful and informative.

It was aimed at those working as specialists in hospitals who regularly see disabled and sick patients.

It was practical as well as theoretical, combining presentations on the Social Model of Disability as well as Self Directed Support and the role of Doctor's in the process.

There was opportunities for the Doctor's to feedback and ask questions about how they can deal with day-to-day issues as well as signposting and advice.
